King Eurystheus, in an effort to curry favor with Hera, chose to set Hercules to the most impossible tasks he could think of, hoping to get Hercules killed at the very least. Twice, Eurystheus would effectively cheat and claim that a task Hercules completed would be discounted, in an effort to prolong Hercules? enforced labor (thus ten labors became twelve).
