Project #3: Digital Storytelling
My partner and I first looked at the potential online environments that we had to utilize for this project. The ones listed felt a little too restricted in one way or another, so we looked at other possibilities. We finally decided on using the map editor that comes with Blizzard's real time strategy game, Warcraft III. We found it to be a fairly simple matter to select a model from the editor's enormous database and place it on the terrain, re-orienting the model as we liked, so it wouldn't be difficult to use this medium to re-enact a scene.
Because the game's models and visuals were of a generally fantastic genre, we looked for a story that would take advantage of the large array of monsters available to us. Thus we decided on the greek myth of Hercules and his twelve labors.
I had more experience with the map editor than my partner did, so I was mainly responsible for creating the scenes, while she developed the entire website. The site was lost when the VIS 40 class ended, as all accounts were wiped, but I still had my original pictures. Months later (Feb 2005), I got around to making a new site for the re-enactment, which is the site you see now.
